Trump's Tariffs May Supercharge Resale Store Sales

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — The trade tariffs imposed by the Trump administration have led to significant fluctuations in the stock market and possible substantial price hikes. However, this situation might result in increased sales for thrift stores.

As you look for a bargain, Trisha Donnelly, who owns the Looks Better On Me Resale and Consignment Store, is on the hunt for your upcoming fashion statement.

"Assign me a task! I'm intimately familiar with every corner of this store. I'll have you looking fabulous in no time," she chuckled.

If you're looking for a new bag or a stylish pair of shoes, Donnelly's store offers an extensive range of distinctive items.

Donnelly highlighted on the rack, "This is an incredibly adorable vintage Ralph Lauren silk skirt featuring a tiny perfect mini."

Plus, it's all within a budget.

"People generally tend to be more careful with their expenditures, yet they still desire high-quality items," she stated.

Approximately 97% of clothing and footwear is produced outside the United States, as reported by the American Apparel & Footwear Association.

This suggests that the tariffs imposed during the Trump administration might lead to significant increases in prices.

“It will ultimately impact where we as a consumer determine we’re going to buy things,” said Brett Gottlieb, the founder of Comprehensive Advisor.

So, consumers may turn to cheaper alternatives like thrift stores to find the same items they love at a cheaper price.

“It’s going to be a more and more viable option,” Donnelly said.

In a post on Truth Social on Sunday, President Trump said, “When tariffs cut in, many people’s income taxes will be substantially reduced, maybe even completely eliminated,” but financial advisors like Gottlieb say that idea could be far fetched.

“I don’t know if that’s a likely outcome when you’re talking income tax,” he explained. “Income tax pays for so many things that we have here in the country.”

As buyers deal with the economy’s uncertainty, Donnelly said she’s already seen an increase in sales at her store and expects more of that in the near future.

She mentioned that success in life involves feeling good, and feeling good often means looking good. So, if you can achieve a great appearance without breaking the bank, what’s stopping you?

If you want to cut back on the high-end expenses in your budget, perhaps you don’t have to.

Gottlieb suggests that buying from resellers could be a method to conserve funds without compromising your standard of living.
