Helena City Council Seeks Deeper Involvement in Municipal Finances

HELENA, Ala. ( WBRC The Helena City Council has begun discussions on ways to become more actively engaged with the financial aspects of the city to ensure everything remains on course.
This occurs following an independent audit showed a deficit.
The city officials indicate that Helena's financial situation is robust. right now, but they aim to maintain their status and proactively address any possible issues.
“As a municipality, we're currently stable for now,” stated City Councilor Andy Healy. “However, we must focus on addressing the long-term issues related to our budgets, expenditures, and the deficits reflected in our records.”
The latest audit shows an $11 million deficit, but the city’s financial advisor told council members that number is misleading, saying it’s mostly because of large projects and pointing out Helena still has a strong credit rating.
Despite this, the council members aim to ensure that all procedures remain orderly, particularly as they continue making payments for these initiatives.
Councilor Laura Joseph presented two proposals during the work session on Monday evening.
- Receiving monthly financial updates rather than quarterly ones.
- Including a representative from the council to assist with signing municipal checks.
She states that both of these measures would provide the council with a clearer view of how taxpayer funds are being utilized.
"We're exploring actions we can take to ensure the city thrives in the long run and maintains the positive progress we currently have," stated Joseph.
It’s not set in stone just yet, but they aim to initiate monthly financial reports starting in June. Regarding who will authorize the payments, those discussions are still underway.
