National Express CEO Steps Down: End of an Era?

The CEO of Mobico plans to resign as the company continues to grapple with ongoing financial difficulties.

Ignacio Garat will step down at the close of April following almost half a decade as the head honcho, during which he led the transformation that changed the company's branding from National Express in 2023.

Phil White, who was the CEO of National Express Group from 1997 to 2006, will now serve as chairman at Mobico Chair. for now on a temporary basis as the hunt for a replacement begins.

Garat’s exit occurs as the company still faces ongoing financial difficulties that started during the pandemic, resulting in share prices dropping over 80 percent in the past five years.

The stock plummeted last year following audit problems that postponed the release of its annual results and resulted in the exit of ex-finance director, James Stamp. In the past six months alone, it has dropped an additional 52 percent.

On Tuesday, Mobico announced that their yearly pre-tax losses were had expanded from £43.2 million to £519.9 million, on a statutory basis.

The owner of National Express last week sold its North American school bus division, This issue has significantly impacted profits due to employee shortages and rising inflation.

However, investors ended up being disappointed with the concluding cost and a cautionary statement from Mobico, indicating that they anticipated their yearly operational profitability would fall within the lower range of previous forecasts.

“Working alongside the Board and leadership team, my priorities as Executive Chair will be to accelerate the pace of operational and financial improvements, appoint a CEO for Mobico’s next chapter and to ensure that the value inherent in the group’s portfolio is better reflected.”
