Customs Seize 2.7 Million Illicit Cigarettes in Camlough Raid

A probe has been initiated following the confiscation of 2.7 million cigarettes near Newry.
The HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) confiscated approximately £1.6 million worth of untaxed cigarettes with assistance from the PSNI on Thursday, April 24th.
HMRC officials conducted a search at a location in the Camlough region and discovered 2.7 million cigarettes not paying UK duties.
No arrests have been reported yet, however, investigations continue.
Dermot Clarke, who leads operations for the Fraud Investigation Service at HMRC, stated:
This confiscation showcases our efforts to disrupt the illegal cigarette trafficking trade—a criminal activity that harms funds necessary for vital public services and destabilizes law-abiding enterprises serving their local areas.
We continue to be dedicated to collaborating closely with our allies to steadfastly chase after the select few who choose not to follow the guidelines.
The PSNI Commander for Newry, Mourne, and Down, Superintendent Norman Haslett, stated:
This confiscation delivers a strong message to individuals involved in such criminal activities that their actions won’t be accepted, and it also highlights the commitment of every law enforcement agency in addressing the local distribution and sale of illegal tobacco items.
The police department is dedicated to collaborating with our partnering organizations and remains steadfast in our pursuit of bringing individuals who engage in illegal activities for personal gain to justice.
Anyone with information about the illegal sale of tobacco should report it to HMRC online .
