Over 400 Workers Face Layoffs as Automotive Seating Manufacturer Shuts Down Two Tennessee Facilities

Columbia, Tenn. (WSMV) -- More than 400 employees will lose their jobs following the announcement that an automotive seat producer will permanently shut down two operations in Tennessee.

WARN Notices submitted to the Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce Development indicate that Adient’s facilities in Maury and Henderson counties will cease operations permanently during the summer. These filings were made public on April 22 and 23.

Layoffs at the Maury County facility Started on April 17, where approximately 95 employees will be impacted. Henderson County facility commenced layoffs on April 21, with 320 workers at that location being terminated. The two sites will close down permanently on June 27.

The workers at the Maury County site fall under the representation of UAW Local 1853 located in Spring Hill. Consequently, the DLWD stated that the Southern Middle Local Workforce Development Area rapid response team will collaborate with both the impacted employees and their employer for support and coordination.

Nevertheless, since the Henderson County workers do not have a union representing them, the Southwest Local Workforce Development Area rapid response team needed to be informed to collaborate with both the employees and Adient.

Below are guidelines for watching WSMV4 live across different platforms.

UAW chapter president John Rutherford told WSMV the locations are closing because the company lost a contract with General Motors to produce seats for Cadillac cars produced at a factory in Spring Hill. Rutherford was even surprised by news of the change when union representatives went to start negotiating a new contract with Adient last month.

Rutherford said UAW represents more than half of the employees impacted by the layoffs at the Maury County location, and they’re working to get those workers hired by another factory in Spring Hill that is now producing seats for GM.

A representative from Adient did not reply despite several attempts to request comments for this article on Monday.
